SUSTAINABLE SULLY

ree

Last Saturday Sully Show saw, amongst many wonderful things, the launch of Sustainable Sully by Sully & Lavernock Community Council.  The Community Council is obliged by law under the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 Section 6 as follows:

“A public authority must seek to maintain and enhance biodiversity in the exercise of functions in relation to Wales, and in so doing promote the resilience of ecosystems, so far as consistent with the proper exercise of those functions.”

Sustainable Sully is proposed as a vehicle to help deliver this through a support network of volunteers within the village, facilitated by the Community Council, willing to give of their time and energy to help support the “resilience of ecosystems”.  This activity can be as local or global as we wish to make it.  There is a growing network of advice and grant aid to support for example projects to develop local habitats.

There are projects in which we can participate locally with a national and international dimension, such as the Marine Conservation Society’s Big British Beach Clean (20th September, 2.00pm at the Jubilee Hall.  To sign up for this go to mcsuk.org/beach-cleans and follow the search process under “What you can do.”).  There is the Butterfly Conservation’s recently announced Wild Spaces project, which encourages and supports gardeners to make their gardens butterfly friendly.  We encourage people to take part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch and share our findings locally.  The Vale Local Nature Partnership is looking for volunteers to help monitor Swifts

Closer to home we have a couple of locations with potential.  The sycamore stand at the top of Hayes Road could, we are advised, be adopted in perpetuity by the National Forest of Wales.  The bund that runs along the top of the beach by the cricket field could benefit from a survey of its flora and fauna; what has it got, what might it have?   Using S106 money, there is a proposal on the table for a linear park to connect the various estates and green spaces north of South Road to the services and facilities on South Road and beyond.  This may provide opportunities for habitat creation.

What other opportunities are there out there?  What spaces do you think could support our wildlife better?
